She remembered how nervous she’d been that day. How her whole body had felt as if it had turned to rubber. How sure she’d been that she would somehow forget how to breathe, and would collapse to the floor and die before the party was over. Because how could you live, feeling like that?

Tingling.

Everything seeming brighter than it had been before.

She felt exactly like that now.

She’d felt the first sparks of it the afternoon she and Cam had first gone for coffee, and it had only grown since then, bit by bit, both when they were together and when they were apart, when she was thinking about seeing him again.

Cam took the hint after a minute and turned his hand over so he could weave his fingers with hers. It felt wonderful, being connected in that simple way, as if they were both twelve years old, here in Rob’s ice cream shop on their first date, each of them wondering what they ought to do next.

Maybe that was the real appeal of being with Cam: that she felt like a middle-schooler again, a kid with no worries. A kid who could simply be happy.

And her birthday was just a couple of months away.

There’d be no party this time, unless her roommates decided to invite a bunch of people to come over for drinks and cake. They hadn’t mentioned anything, but that didn’t mean it wouldn’t happen; both of them were the type to set things up at the last minute.

But Kara found herself wishing that she could bring Cam over to Aunt Molly’s instead. That Aunt Molly, and the rest of her family, weren’t a thousand miles away. They’d like Cam, she was sure. Within a few minutes, they’d accept him as one of the crowd. Start showing him old photos and telling him stories about Kara’s childhood bloopers.

Then they’d start asking…

Faster than she’d intended to, she pulled her hand back. When Cam’s eyebrows went up, she explained, “Our ice cream is melting. We probably ought to eat it before it turns to mush.”

He frowned a little, but he said, “Yeah, you’re right.”

His expression didn’t change, though. He was obviously puzzled by her sudden about-face, just moments after she’d told him what Aunt Molly had said. Moments after she’d told him that he was important to her.

Why did men have to be such jerks?

She’d told Louisa that the guys who hung out at the park weren’t full of themselves, but was that really true? They kept interrupting what she was doing, barging into her space as if they couldn’t believe that a woman wouldn’t want their attention. And if she agreed to go out with them…

Eric had wanted to marry her after three dates. The rest of them just wanted to sleep with her.

And how many had there been who’d wanted her to slide their screenplay into the pile on Louisa’s desk? Or for her to poke around on Louisa’s phone to see if she had a private number for Spielberg, or Tom Hanks, or J.
